For more that 85 years LANDER® has been providing the American public with quality bath and personal care products at a value-based price. The company is best known for its adult bath line, including bubble baths, foam baths and 3-in-1 products, as well as its popular kids’ bath-time products. As one of the longest selling beauty and personal care brands on store shelves, LANDER® is sold in more than 40 countries, and offers more than 139 products including oral and skin care lines, shampoos and conditioners and a complete baby line.
The company was founded in 1920 by entrepreneur Charles Oestrich whose innovations in manufacturing and distribution allowed the company to provide quality beauty products at an extremely affordable price to women all across the country. In addition, Oestrich made LANDER® the first beauty care manufacturer to base its pricing on product cost and overhead, instead of what the market would bear. Throughout the 1920s, LANDER® produced a range of cosmetics, perfumes and toiletries including one of its most enduring scents “Pixie” which, for the next four decades, could be found in a variety of products and gift sets.
Beginning in the 1930s and throughout the 1950s LANDER® was a staple in local “5 & 10” dime stores across the country, where the firm's toilet waters and scents could be found in a variety of novelty bottles and shapes such as a swan, oil lamp, or reindeer. With names like “Movie Star,” “Black Orchid,” “Forbidden Secret” and “Samedi-Soir,” these scents were extremely popular and the unique bottles decorated many womens' dressers or vanities. Also during this period, LANDER® was well known for its wide variety of scented toiletry items such as bubble bath powders, body talcs and bath salts. Colorfully packaged gift sets with these items were extremely popular and sold well throughout these decades.
In the 1960’s, the company shifted its product offerings to include everyday personal care products such as lotions, shampoos and petroleum jellies. These were geared to sell in the mass merchant stores that were becoming popular and ensured the company’s continued success into subsequent decades.
Today LANDER® is owned and manufactured by Surefil, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
